The Significance of Building Your Tribe

Do you have difficulties networking? The way you interact with people will definitely determine how well you build your tribe and ultimately your business. A tribe can be defined as a group or community of people linked together socially by something they have in common.

Building your tribe could be very challenging depending upon whether you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert. Actual data suggests the complete opposite of what you would expect when comes to these types of people and tribe building.

There are many self-proclaimed introverts in all industries and lines of work who excel and come alive in settings that involve interacting with the people. They have somehow managed to learn how to flip a switch in their mind to turn it “on” and become social butterflies. In spite of having fears about putting themselves out there in the public’s eye, they do it anyway and it goes a long way in building their tribes.

These people are no different than you. They are just comfortable with putting fear aside and getting out of their comfort zone. In his book, Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazzi talks about this very thing and how it can be problematic and have repercussions to your business’ growth. The book gives you specific steps along with the mindset that is necessary to grow your tribe. 

When it comes to building your community, emphasis should be placed on cultivating a network or relationships to help with the challenges of life and to grow your business. This relationship building goes beyond typical networking and at its best produces more than just acquaintances. It can be described as tribe building that transcends establishing a relationship for the sake of business gain. Tribes help facilitate success in all aspects of your life.

Building Your Tribe Requires Skill 

There is certainly a skill-set involved in building your tribe and it is something that must be practiced in order to truly become an expert. Some of the skills addressed in the book include warming the cold call, expressing your passion in conversation, connecting with connectors and expanding your inner circle.

There is no better feeling than being around those you consider part of your tribe. You could make the argument that being around your community is similar to being with family. It is a gathering of like-minded people with common interests and perspectives on business (..and life in some cases).

It can also be empowering in it creates a supportive environment that makes it easier to do business. Most successful people in business (.and life) can trace their success back to a support network or community.

Just imagine where you would be if you did not have your community or tribe behind you lending support. There is a famous quote from Mother Teresa that says “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things”. It speaks to the significance of building your tribe and how connections matter.
